The Symptom: You set a custom credit term on the Credits settings page, but somewhere in your portal the old wording is still showing — most often on a certificate a learner downloaded, or inside a notification email.
The Root Cause: In almost every case the setting is working correctly and the wording you are looking at was never in its scope. Certificates are generated once, at the moment a learner completes a module, and store that file permanently — so a certificate earned before the change keeps its original wording forever. Email body text is written by your admins, not generated by the portal, so it does not pick up the term either. The remaining cause is a cleared field, which restores the default rather than saving a blank label.
The Fix
Work through these in order to identify which situation applies:
- Go to Portal Administration > Settings > Credits and confirm all three fields contain your term. If any field is empty, it is serving the default — enter your term and save.
- If the wrong wording is on a certificate, check when the learner completed the module. Certificates generated before you changed the term keep their original wording permanently, and there is no way to reissue them. Have the learner complete a module now and check the new certificate to confirm the setting is working.
- If the wrong wording is inside a notification email body, edit the email text directly. Only the merge-field description you read while composing picks up your term. The words surrounding the merge field are yours to write and were never changed by this setting.
- If the wrong wording is in a feed or export going to your membership system, that is expected. The AMS and membership sync labels the value "Credits" regardless of your portal term, and the outbound feed is unaffected by this setting.
- If a value of one is showing your plural form, or a fractional value is showing your singular, confirm you entered the forms in the correct fields. Exactly one uses the singular; every other value, fractions included, uses the plural. Report columns always use the plural.
Verification: How to know it worked Open the module editor for any module. The tab and the credit field labels should show your term. Then complete a test module and download the certificate — it should carry your wording. If both look correct, the setting is applied and anything still showing the old term falls into one of the categories above rather than being a fault.
